Unable to connect to ViewPoint Server

If you are unable to connect to the FactoryTalk ViewPoint server, consider the following potential causes and remedies.

Internet Information Services installed after .NET framework

If you installed IIS after .NET 2.0 framework, the permissions for the ASPNET user have not been set correctly. The following message shows when trying to connect to FactoryTalk ViewPoint Administration:

"Server Error in '/FTVP' Application. Failed to access IIS metabase."

To set the ASPNET user permissions:

  1. As a Windows administrator, open the command prompt.
  2. Change directory to C:\Windows\Microsoft.NET\Framework\v4.0.30319
  3. Run aspnet_regiis -i

Cookies are not enabled

In order to log in to FactoryTalk ViewPoint, your browser must allow cookies.

  • Verify your browser has cookies enabled.

Computer name contains an invalid DNS character

If the FactoryTalk ViewPoint host computer name contains an underscore, it may not be accessible on the network.

  • Enter the IP address in the URL syntax: http://xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx/ftvp. If the site has an HTTPS binding, enter https instead of http.

For more information about using underscore characters on the ViewPoint Server, see Answer ID 64842 in the Rockwell Automation Knowledgebase.
